Harrods
87 Brompton Rd.
London,  SW1
Phone 020 - 77301234
The only English department store classed among monuments and museums on every visitor's list, it hardly needs an introduction. It is swank and plush and as deep-carpeted as ever; its spectacular food halls are alone worth the trip; and it stands out from the pack for fashion, too. You can forgive the store its immodest motto, Omnia, omnibus, ubique ("Everything, for everyone, everywhere"), because there are more than 230 departments, including a pet shop rumored to supply you with anything from aardvarks to zebras on request and a toy department---sorry, "kingdom"---which does the same with plush versions. During the pre-Christmas period and sales---the legendary one is during the last three weeks of January, but another storewide event, usually only one week, is held in mid-July---the entire store is a menagerie. Tube: Knightsbridge.

Harvey Nichols
109 Knightsbridge
London,  SW1
Phone 020 - 72355000
It's just a block away from Harrods, but it's not competing on the same turf, because its passion is fashion, all the way. There are nearly six floors of it, including departments for dressing homes and men, but the woman who invests in her wardrobe is the main target. Accessories are strong suits, especially jewelry, scarves, and makeup---England's first MAC counter here was 10 deep for months. The fourth floor now has a chic home-design department, featuring such names as Nina Campbell, Mulberry, Ralph Lauren, and Designer's Guild. A reservation at the Fifth Floor restaurant is coveted. Tube: Knightsbridge.

John Lewis
278 Oxford St.
London,  W1
Phone 020 - 76297711
This store's motto is "Never knowingly undersold," and for an increasingly wide range of goods at sensible prices, John Lewis is hard to beat. The brother store, Peter Jones, in Sloane Square, has a place in Sloane Ranger history, and you will probably encounter more Barbour jackets, velvet hair bands, and pearls here than anywhere else in town---and that's just on the customers. For the visitor to London who's handy with the needle, John Lewis has a wonderful selection of dress and furnishing fabrics. Many's the American home with John Lewis drapes. Tube: Oxford Circus.

Liberty
200 Regent St.
London,  W1
Phone 020 - 77341234
With a wonderful black-and-white mock-Tudor facade, this is a peacock among pigeons in humdrum Regent Street. Inside, the labyrinthine building is full of nooks and crannies stuffed with goodies, like a dream of an Eastern bazaar. Famous principally for its fabrics, it also has an Oriental department, rich with color; menswear that tends toward the traditional; and women's wear that has lately been spiced up with extra designer ranges. The store is hard to resist, as you may well find an original gift---especially one made from those classic Liberty prints. Tube: Oxford Circus

Selfridges
400 Oxford St.
London,  W1
Phone 020 - 76291234
It's near the Marble Arch end of Oxford Street, where blocks are crowded in the middle of the day and at sale time. This giant, bustling store was started early in the 20th century by an American, though it's now British-owned. If this all-rounder has one outstanding department, it has to be its Food Hall, or else its frenetic cosmetics department---one of the largest in Europe---which seems to perfume the air the whole length of Oxford Street. In recent years, Selfridges has made a specialty of high-profile popular designer fashions and has spent a lot of money sprucing up. There's a theater-ticket counter and British Airways travel shop in the basement. Tube: Bond St.
