Musical Concerts Scene

London
The ticket prices to symphony-size orchestral concerts are still relatively moderately priced, usually ranging from £5 to £35. If you can't book in advance, then arrive at the hall an hour before the performance for a chance at returns.

Besides the main venues, smaller concert halls, the big arts-center foyers, and churches all over the city hold lunchtime concerts. They may feature string quartets, singers, jazz ensembles, or gospel choirs, and are usually free or cost less than £5. Performances usually begin about 1 PM and last an hour.

Royal Albert Hall
Kensington Gore
London,  SW7
Phone 020 - 75898212
For a different concert-going experience, as well as the chance to take part in a great British tradition, try the Royal Albert Hall during the Promenade Concert season: eight weeks lasting from July to September. The usual chestnuts are featured, along with some novelties, but the capper is the last night, a madly jingoistic display of singing "Land of Hope and Glory," Union Jack waving, and general madness. Demand for tickets is so high that you must enter a lottery. For regular Proms, tickets run £3--£30; special "promenade" (standing) tickets usually cost half the price of normal tickets and are available at the hall on the night of the concert. The concerts have begun to be jumbo-screen broadcast in Hyde Park, but even here a seat on the grass requires a paid ticket. Tube: South Kensington.

Big Screen Scene

London
Despite the video invasion, West End movie theaters continue to do good business. Most of the major houses (Odeon, ABC, etc.) are in the Leicester Square--Piccadilly Circus area, where tickets average £8. Mondays and matinees are often cheaper, at around £5, and there are also fewer crowds. Some theaters offer student discounts, and prices drop to around £5 as you get out of the West End, becoming even lower in the suburbs, but unless you're staying there, any savings could be eaten up by transportation costs.

The few movie clubs and repertory cinemas that still exist screen a wider range of movies, including classic, Continental, and underground, as well as rare or underrated masterpieces. Some charge a membership fee of less than £1.
